Using declassified files and evidence, Smith, an advocacy case worker who previously worked as a diplomat in Ireland, traces the history, demise, and legacy of the Ulster Defence Regiment, a locally raised militia formed in 1970, which developed into the largest regiment in the British army. He describes its background and traditions, the experiences of those who served in it, and the illegal and collusive acts of some of its members (including murders of Catholics), as it became a training and arming facility for loyalists, as well as what the British government and armed forces knew about its activities.
