Deception Underway

Set against the backdrop of the early 1990s, Deception Underway is a gripping, character-driven naval drama that immerses readers in the trials, friendships, and betrayals of life at sea and beyond. Inspired by true events, this novel follows Richard, a dedicated and ambitious U.S. Navy Electronic Warfare specialist, as he navigates the complexities of military life, the pursuit of love, and the harsh reality of deception among those he once considered his closest friends.Richard is a sailor with big dreams-he envisioned a future stationed in Japan with a successful career, and a lasting love. But when an unexpected transfer sends him to Norfolk, Virginia, instead, his world shifts in ways he never anticipated. As he struggles to accept his new reality, he leans on his friendships, forming an unbreakable bond with his shipmates. However, some relationships are built on lies rather than loyalty. One of those so-called friends is Stewart, a charismatic and reckless sailor whose lies run deep. While Richard builds his future with integrity and discipline, Stewart thrives on manipulation and self-interest, hiding a dark secret that threatens to unravel everything. As Richard unknowingly becomes entangled in Stewart's web of deception, he watches in frustration as those around him fall victim to lies-most notably, Tara, an innocent and trusting woman who moves to Virginia Beach for a man she doesn't truly know.He pursues his own chance at love-with the beautiful and captivating Jennifer-he also battles the weight of responsibility. He sees the warning signs Stewart ignores, the financial ruin that lurks around the corner, and the personal destruction waiting to claim yet another unsuspecting victim. Though Richard is not responsible for Stewart's actions, he finds himself unable to stand by and watch the fallout.Through deployments across the Atlantic and the Caribbean, wild liberty port calls in places like Nassau and Guantanamo Bay, and the stress of naval exercises, Deception Underway paints a vivid picture of life as a sailor-where moments of adventure and camaraderie collide with the isolation of duty and the consequences of misplaced trust. With raw emotion and gripping realism, Patrick Riley delivers a deeply personal debut novel that explores the resilience of the human spirit while enduring the challenges of navigating relationships, and the harsh truth that not everyone who stands beside you is truly on your side. As Richard faces the ultimate test of loyalty and self-respect, he must decide: Will he let deception define his journey, or will he break free and chart his own course? For readers who enjoy military fiction, heartfelt drama, adventure, and stories of perseverance, Deception Underway is an unforgettable novel about the battles fought both at sea and in the heart.
