This is the second volume of the three that comprise the second edition of the highly regarded work first published in 1996. The other volumes are on fundamentals, and on advanced methods. In his preface editor Levine (electrical and computer engineering, U. of Maryland, College Park) asserts that "It is simply a fact of life in engineering that once a problem is solved, people are no longer as interested in it as they were when it was unsolved." For this reason, all the applications chapters are new, and Levine took pains to find "especially inspiring and exciting" ones. Furthermore, he no longer organizes applications by academic discipline, because most are interdisciplinary. The new organization is structured around broad areas such as automotive and aerospace.
