This third volume in a three-volume set reports on the work of the Committee on Enslaved and Disenfranchised Populations in Rutgers History. Contributors in African American history and the history of social movements (most affiliated with Rutgers) chronicle the experiences of students, faculty, and administrators at the campuses of the entire Rutgers system. The book features material on the experiences of Puerto Rican students as well as black students, covering the takeover of Conklin Hall by student activists, protests against South African apartheid, and antiracist movements of the 1990s. B&w historical photos are included. The Scarlet and Black Project tells the stories of 24 enslaved people who helped build Rutgers University in New Jersey; a companion web site is connected to the project.
